The 981 is the last Cayman with a naturally aspirated flat-six across the whole range, and the one that gave us the first Cayman GT4. It is a common target for buyers who want the newer chassis without the four-cylinder 718.

Know the car

In the US: the Cayman (2.7-liter, 275 hp) and Cayman S (3.4-liter, 325 hp) from 2014, and the Cayman GTS (340 hp) from 2015.
Six-speed manual or seven-speed PDK on the Cayman, S and GTS.
The 2016 Cayman GT4 used a 3.8-liter flat-six rated at 385 hp and was sold with a six-speed manual only.

What to check before you buy

On a GT4, track use: tire and brake wear, and whether the car has been tracked hard.
Option lists matter more than on earlier cars: sport chrono, PASM, the sport exhaust and the seats all move prices.
Accident history and paint thickness, since GT4 values reward originality.
